LISTEN TO THE MOVEMENT
ABOUT THE ALBUM
THE MOVEMENT is a soundtrack for a reimagined world of belonging and justice. Building on their mission to make music that makes change, Alphabet Rockers crafted this 13-song GRAMMY-winning album with the children in their collective, sparking listeners to connect their heads and hearts as we find unity in community. The songwriters reflect on real moments from their lives, and the youth ask the world to listen: “It’s our turn to speak up and be heard. Because our voices matter.” THE MOVEMENT is written for the whole family to understand their power, break biases, disrupt systems of oppression, and find community care. And "When it’s all said and done - the word is LOVE.”
It’s a vibe, it’s the heart. It’s The Movement.
"Alphabet Rockers is important music... it creates the culture that is the reality of the world we want."
— W. Kamau Bell, Emmy-Award Winner, CNN.
CREATING THE MOVEMENT
This album reflects Alphabet Rockers songwriting process of listening and learning, centering the voices of our community. Each song begins with a question - and for this album, our collective asked questions about how to create a world of justice and belonging.
Eight months into the pandemic, we wanted to start writing but we were feeling somewhat powerless, particularly being isolated from our community. We leaned on our families and asked questions about power – "when do you feel powerful?" and "when do you feel powerless" - these two questions unlocked all of us in a creative flow that continues today. This process helped us POWER UP. From there, we spent hundreds of hours in conversation with restorative and transformative justice practitioners, family members, and the Alphabet Rockers collective asking our questions. Through our all-ages artist fellowship at the Othering & Belonging Institute, we found our writing addressed multiple themes. These themes were: understanding power, disrupting bias, ending oppression and finding community care. We continued the flow in our anti-oppression workshops with teachers, students and one another for the three years in the pandemic. The result is "The Movement."
Our connection to the system is in our everyday lives. It's our social understanding of systems and how they affect us on multiple levels.
In these video clips, learn about how the youth found their sense of power for the song "Strength in Numbers" and see how we brought anti-oppression workshops into schools with "We Will Not Be Oppressed."
